Today I heard two of my favorite things: Couleur Jazz had a mention of NaNoWriMo!

Finally!

Couleur Jazz officially launched as a full radio station yesterday evening, but I first heard it early this morning when my alarm went off.

The station is French, but that's not a problem for me; I'm trilingual.

A correction: my Jazz Radio station is called Couleur Jazz, not Cool. The word is French for "color".

TV Stations in my neck of the woods are heavily promoting the latest release from the Susan Arioli band.

She's not Holly Cole, but who else is? She's still quite good.

Finally, the official launch of CKLX (or COOL FM) will be tomorrow, Tuesday.

Considering they'd advertised the intended launch at the Jazz festival this past summer as some time in September, they're running very late!

Friday night on CoolTV was the first time I've ever seen Bela Fleck and the Flecktones perform. That was interesting - especially seeing that Bela was a guy! (I should have known that... so is Bela Lugosi.)

I'm still trying to figure out if Bela's guitar actually incorporates several instruments, or if it just looks cool.

Q1: A 14-year-old Australian boy, Christopher Harris, announced yesterday that next Spring he plans to become the youngest person ever to attempt to climb and summit Mt. Everest. How do you feel about someone as young as Harris attempting such a risky endeavor?:
I think that's a bad thing. Considering how many people have lost digits and worse on the mountain, the fact that he hasn't even got a mature health system works against him.

Q2: Are you better off or worse today financially then you were four years ago at this same time (in December of 2000)?
I'd definitely say worse off.

Q3: Do you personally know anyone who has made it really big either in Hollywood, politics, sports, or business? If you don't know anyone directly, how about thru that whole X Degrees of Separation thing?
One of my close cousins is a professional wrestler, and I've seen him perform.

In two degrees of separation, my dad worked with both William Shatner and Leonard Cohen at different jobs.

Q4: If you could choose one event from any point in the future whose outcome could be known to you now, what would you like to know?
That's an easy and somber question to answer: I'd love to know the exact day a cure for MS is discovered.

I finally tried Emusic's free 50 MP3 trial. I mostly downloaded Miles Davis, Dizzie Gillespie and John Coltrane tracks...

Now that I got my 50 songs, I'll cancel the account. I can't afford to make it a pay one.

Onesome: Dancing-- Dancing? Does anyone go dancing anymore? I mean, disco died, and the club scene? Hmmm... Is dancing dead? ...or are we just here on the web instead of out for the evening?
I don't know many jazz standards I'd call danceable... but my lack of energy exerting myself pretty much stops dancing from being likely for me.

Twosome: Polar-- Polar bears seem to do well in the snow... How about you? Is snow just another thing you deal with when it shows up, or is it shutdown time? ...and if you're posting from a non-snowy locale, do you make trips to actually see snow? It's okay to admit it...
Ironically, the snow began in Montreal 2 days ago... in theory I can handle colder weather better, but ice tends to cause me to walk very slowly if I have to. Falling could be catastrophic for me.

Threesome: Bears-- Bears? Christmas Bears? Have you seen the number of bears on the shelf this year? Are you getting one for anyone? ...or are you looking forward to receiving one? ...or do you still think that inguana in the elf outfit is more your style *g*?
I'm not a big bear fan... but Winnie the Pooh has been a large part of my nephew and nieces lives so far. My nephew is too old now for bears, but his sisters aren't... I may get them some for Hannukah.

It wouldn't be an appropriate December 1^st if I didn't at least acknowledge World Aids Day.

I've been fortunate that none of my circle of friends or family died of Aids, but I'm in the minority for that. With 20 million victims worldwide, odds are that many of you reading this have been affected in some way by it.

I often point out to friends that in MS I have the immune system wrecker that isn't fatal. That's admittedly a small distinction, but I guess it's something...

Think of ways you can help, whether by supporting a research charity, or even by bringing meals to someone struck by HIV and unable to cook for themselves. Even small things help.

On CKLX they just blended both of my favorite things, the Beatles and Jazz... a Jazz version of the song Blackbird.

NaNoWriMo has been keeping me preoccupied, so I haven't been updating here as often as I'd like lately...

CKLX began their rollout on the 21^st as they announced. It's still not the official launch, according to the announcements they play, but at least the music is now more varied!

This, along with the date of November 11^th should be self-explanatory

It's not what I'd consider really 'soon', and most of NaNoWriMo will be done, but at least I know it'll finally happen!

NaNoWriMo hept me from posting anything since Monday... since a lot of it is based around the seasons, this meme from 3X Thursday fits:

1.Do you have a favorite season? Which is it? Why?
Actually two: spring and fall. The reason: they aren't too warm for me to handle moving, and not too cold for me to enjoy. Plus: no snow. That's a big plus. No gray sky either.

2. Mood and mind changes come along with seasonal changes. Why do you think that is?
I think if the sky is all gray and cloudy, our minds and bodies don't feel right. Much as I hate the sun, what with the way it reduces me to a ball of jelly, the light does make me feel better.

3. Which seasons are your highlights? Which ones are 'the blahs'?
Again, spring and fall are my highlights. Summer, unlike for sun worshippers, is a definite "blah". I spend all of it huddled by my air conditioner to stay mobile.

Bonus Question for Comments: If you had to choose one season that would last all year, which one would it be? Why?
I'd have to say spring. Not only is it just warm enough, but it's the season where nature renews itself, where the snow vanishes.

Another week of regular ads on CKLX that the station goes into operation very soon, and it still hasn't.

For awhile they seemed to be playing different music loops, but it's back to one of the same stuff for a few days now. I'm hoping this is a good sign.

saturday-8 :: trust and love and devotion

1. last night, i saw my first-ever crush, sting, in concert. he was amazing, as usual. who was your VERY first crush?
My poster for my first real celebrity crush is still up on my bedroom wall at the family home, even though I no longer live there: Olivia Newton-John.

My first REAL crush though was I believe a redhead I knew in grade school. I know: that's very Charlie Brown of me...

2. speaking of first crushes, who was your first kiss? were they the same person? tell us about that.
It's been so many years, I don't even remember her name. This isn't meant as bragging on my part, but it happened when I was 7 years old and living in Laval. A young girl there took me behind a couch to smooch.

Obviously, she and my first crush weren't one and the same.

3. i have a hard time trusting people. i've also told my husband, "i'll never let you in far enough to hurt me." in love, are you a trustful person? why or why not?
In love, I'm a very trusting person. I've shared a lot of myself to my significant others in the past. I've been burned by the few I was that close with so far, but my honesty hasn't changed.

4. what about in friendships OR work relationships? why or why not?
I worked with one of my last girlfriends. It made for a very unpleasant work environment after she broke off with me. I wouldn't ever do that again!

Friendships... in the past few cases I'd say no. Not that I've ever seen them again, mind you... so it's become a moot point.

5. devotion ... i have a devotion to not only sting, but the british sex god, sean bean (starring in the new movie 'national treasure' with nic cage ... get ye to a theatre!). i collect ALL of their movies and soundtracks. which celebrity/ies are you devoted to? and why?
There are 3 ladies I've jokingly referred to as my Holy Trinity of Righteous Babes. They are three actresses I have a deep attraction to for different reasons:

I. Michelle Pfeiffer: She's just an ethereal beauty to me.
II. Meg Ryan: I grew up with her on my TV. I not only find her attractive but also feel an attatchment to her.
III. Jennifer Connally. I've always had a thing for women with black hair and blue eyes. I find her one of the most striking.

6. i'm having to make the decision to get back with my husband, who has left my family twice and been thrown out once for 'bad behaviour.' this is by FAR the hardest time i've had deciding whether to trust someone or not. what was yours? tell us about it.
That's a very personal and painful old wound, one I won't re-open.

7. i am extremely devoted to my cat, minou, who is a 5-yr. old blue point siamese. is there an animal that you are devoted to in your life, past or present? tell us about them.
There have been several over my life... currently are my two cats: Boots, a 15-year old part Persian, who's incredibly temperamental - and Squeaky, my nearly 12-year old callico, who's been with me since she was 6 months old.

Before them was my first cat Minou, also part Persian. He was an outdoor cat who disappeared on us when I was a kid. Also my 16-year old dog Winnie, who was put to sleep about 15 years ago. I still think of her often; I grew up with her.

8. next weekend is hallowe'en ... do you have any decorations up?
I haven't done the Hallowe'en thing in many years.

My first answer would be "neither", but given a choice I'd prefer a wedgie. You never know if the toilet bowl was cleaned before your head is pushed in, and that could be too gross.

Again I'd first say "neither". I'm not gay, and kissing men isn't my thing.

Of the two however I'd pick Ryan. Cowell smokes, and I'm allergic to smoke.

I'd go for an ingrown toenail, simply because I haven't got a clue what a carbunkle is.
4. vote for john kerry OR george w bush?

Without hesitation, this Canadian would vote for Kerry if he could. I've despised Bush since day one, and I see him as the man who's destroying the US. A broomstick would make a better president.

CKLX (Montreal's new jazz radio station) is still playing a music loop - but the ads announce that it will very soon be fully operational.

About time! I've been listening to the same loops for about a month... they have changed the loop every few days, but it's been really dull to hear the same thing so frequently anyway.

I just changed some things in this blog's design. Not only was it looking too busy with all the extra graphics, but they were slowing down the load time.

I think I'll be making a new page for the Red Cross donations though... it's been over 3 years since 9-11, but there's still much in the way of need for help.

Finally, a set of music-related questions!

1. Do you prefer just audio or video/audio of your favorite songs?

Most jazz (at least the older classics) exist only as audio. Some of the classic stuff is on tape, and I see it on CoolTV though.

2. What do you like to listen to in the car (radio, CD, mp3 playlist...etc)?

Since I'm always a passenger it depends what the driver is listening to. More often than not it's AM radio (many of my drivers are Haitian, so I hear a lot of CPAM, which is on the AM band). A few have CD players in their cars though.

3. Do you lean more towards a LIVE version of songs or the studio release?

I have to go with the studio record release on the album usually, but jazz sounds best live, say at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Only live can you hear an artist experiment with their tunes.

4. What is your ideal concert venue?

It doesn't exist as such anymore, but the Montreal Forum was great.

5. What's your favorite format (vinyl, cassette, cd, mp3 etc)?

Usually, CD has the best sound to me. I have some jazz recordings on cassette, none on vinyl - mind you, I don't have a record player, so those would be wasted.

Bonus: You can only see one concert this year. Who would it be, and where would the concert be.

It may surprise you, but my dream concert would be a supershow with Queen (when Freddie Mercury was alive) and Billy Joel. They aren't jazz, but these are the folks I've listened to since I was a child, and are my favorites.

CKLX (the new jazz radio station in Montreal) has now been testing their broadcaster for more than three weeks!

Either they're currently using a different recording of music, or I'm hearing the songs I haven't before. Regardless, it's very disappointing to ultimately keep hearing the same things.

I was an early adopter... I started this blog in late 1999 - early 2000 after I heard about blogs. That's why there are so many posts.

I got a LiveJournal 2 years ago, and my post quantity here suffered. I'm trying to change that.

Surprisingly, Wil Wheaton inspired me. I couldn't stand the Wesley Crusher character on Star Trek: The Next Generation, but Wil has turned out to be a far cooler person as he grew up.

Q1: If you were granted the power to create and then use a "Panic"/"Stop" button, what are three things you’d use it for?
The easiest answer: I'd use it to stop the planes from crashing into the World Trade Center on 9/11.

Second, I'd use it to stop Mark David Chapman from assassinating John Lennon. (yes, I was around in the 1980s)

Third, I'd use it to pause the death of Ray Charles, at least long enough so that I could see him in person.

Q2: If you could afford it, would you take a ride into space before the end of 2005?
Without hesitation! I'd love to regale my descendants with stories of that trip.

Q3: If you were given the talent to be considered "world-class" at something which you currently know little to nothing about, what would it be?
That would most likely be being able to play jazz saxophone or clarinet. It would be great to be able to play the jazz music I love.

Folks have often mis-spelled my last name, BOWMAN instead of BOMAN.

It bothered me for a long time, and I did always try to correct it. Now, I just leave it. If I can't win, what's the point?

Montreal's new Jazz radio station has been testing their transmission power for several weeks now. Said testing means they are just playing the same tape of songs over and over. I'd like to hear some OTHER materials already!

How ironic... the Tuesday Twosome this week also deals with time management:

1. Two things you procrastinate the most about:
As I already stated, my writing projects are one thing. The other is showering... I get it done each day, it just takes me some time to get to it.

2. Two things that take priority in your time management:
The first and topmost thing is getting my cats food. They will never go hungry on my watch!

The other thing that gets high priority is the shows I set my VCR to tape. With my writing taking up so much of my time, I time-shift a lot.

3. Do you usually arrive on time or late?
I try to arrive on time. With my habit of always reserving my Transport Adapté to get me somewhere at least 30 minutes before a schedule, I usually can. I have the genes to get somewhere late though; my mom is habitually late for things, and I inherited that, so being on time can be a struggle.

4. Do you get annoyed when other people arrive late or you really don't care?
I think it would be hypocritical for me to be upset with others about it!

5. What two things would you change/delete about your daily schedule in order for you to have more "down" time?
First off, I'd get to sleep a little earlier. I've been a Night Owl for many years - but if I could be up early and more alert, I'd probably get more done, as well as to have more appropriate rest time.

Secondly, I'd try to get myself more determined when I sit at my keyboard to write. I'd get more done while I'm there, and have better justification to relax.

With no hesitation I say it would be my drive to get things done. I've been realizing how much longer it's taking me to complete a project than I thought at first. I've been procrastinating too much.

Star Wars

Well, it's actually out now, but my first thoughts:

1. A story that brought the Joseph Campbell Hero's Journey into cinema very prominently
2. The film series that brought my imagination to soar
3. Return of the Jedi should really have been named Return of the Muppets
4. I don't intend to ever buy the DVDs, just try to encode my tape collection. Firstly, I won't buy another copy of the films. Secondly, I won't support George Lucas' BS about re-editing the classic films

What is your idea of Utopia? What would your Utopia have that this world doesn't?

Hmm, let me see... in my idea of Utopia, my favorite music plays constantly... plus, I see again the people who meant much to my life (my 3^rd and 5^th grade teacher Mrs. Hope Hoey, who really encouraged my creativity), family I never got to meet (I never met my zeide Jack. He died many years before I was born. Also, bubie Anna, who was a large part of my life - and I'd want her to see her husband again without disability), my mom and dad (mom's parents were killed in a car accident when she was a kid... I'd hope she could see them again), all my beloved pets, and people who inspired me (like Isaac Asimov).

Illness and disabilities would be gone, and there'd be no stress or tension either. That way, neither zeide or I would have limitations.

I found the spot on the radio dial where our new jazz-themed radio station will be.

I say "will be" because it's still in a testing mode, so they just play a loop of 4 songs daily.

One disappointment is that it appears it'll only broadcast in French. I'm bilingual, so I can understand it... but mental translation makes for lousy wake-up alarm stuff.

3x Thursday gave me questions that fit my blog theme nicely again:

1.When you listen to music, do you focus on the music or the lyrics? Both? Neither? Why/why not?
Most jazz is actually more musical than lyrical (obviously not counting the songs). As a result, I easily focus more on the music - especially for songs repeated from other versions. I like to compare how the newer versions to the old, how they handle the chord progressions and so on.

2. Do you have a particular favorite instrument in which you focus on when you're listening to music? Are you able to pick out a part and concentrate on it?
I really like the sound of horns, specifically the clarinet and the trumpet. I do focus on them when they are part of the piece, as I find them very sensual and evocative instruments.

3. How important is it to you that band be able to play their instruments well? Why/why not?
That's an easy question! If the musicians in a jazz group don't play their instruments well, the arrangement won't sound terribly good no matter what the band leader does to it.

Bonus Question for Comments: Would you be a good music critic? Why/why not?
I'd have to answer not. While I can critique if I do or don't like a performance, I've found - especially during the various Idol shows - that I'm often off from the musical tastes of other people.

A combination of streaming Internet radio (I've really grown enamored with the Mercora network) and songs I've purchased from Puretracks.com (iTunes for Canada).

I bought 2 CDs at the Montreal Jazz Fest, but mostly I purchase albums from Puretracks. I have limited floor space, so that helps to conserve it.

3. What is your opinion about downloading music without purchasing it? Do you believe it really hurts record sales? Is anyone but the RIAA really suffering?
Polls have shown that downloads aren't hurting the RIAA. If they wanted to really turn people away from song swapping, they would make CDs cost less and make more of the catalogue of music available. With CD prices not dropping since they were introduces (they're about 20 bucks, with re-issues and imports even more!), and the difficulty in finding tunes more than about 8 years old... well, people are generally fed up with them.

That said, places like Puretracks pay the artists for their songs, not the RIAA. The folks who already did the work. I want the estates of Miles Davis (and sadly, most of the Ramones now), and artists like Sonny Rollins to make money for their work.

Bonus Question for Comments: Do you think that the internet a good source for new (or stuff you'd never really think about listening to) music? How? Why/Why not?
I've discovered quite a few new artists who I wouldn't have thought of thanks to the 'net. Without it, I'd have never heard of them.

Hmm... let me think... offhand the first film to come to mind is the original Hallowe'en. The piano theme always gets my heart pounding.

Well, Canadian Idol is over for this year - and in my opinion, Canada got it wrong.

Regardless of my feelings for her, Theresa Sokyrka was the one who showed she could actually sing a variety of styles and genres. She didn't capture Janis Joplin when she sang Another little piece of my heart, but I think that was the only real exception.

Kaylan Porter on the other hand... I never really got the feeling he was better than a karaoke singer. He's a pretty boy, perfect to capture the screaming pre-teen girl demographic, but I never really got the feeling that he has any real talent. Besides, a boy making Born to be wild - a song popular about 30 years before he was born - his signature piece from the show... well, it just annoys me.

I flipped through the 2004 Jewish Ad directory as I waited for my Transport this morning. In an ad, clear as day, was a party DJ calling himself DJ Jazzy Jeff. The funny thing is the fact that a year or so ago, I called myself DJ Jeff Jazzy to avoid confusion with the guy who works with Will Smith. Guess this guy had no such consideration...

I just saw a show of Jazz Classics on CoolTV.

I didn't recognize him at first, but as soon as he performed "Hidi-hidi-ho" I realized that this was Cab Calloway.

I just changed over the Comment system on all my Blogs... to say that it led to strange temporary glitches in each one is an understatement!

One real negative for the entire system is that it no longer has 'noscript' tags. Hopefully, few folks who visit here have javascript turned off.

Well, the Jazzfest finished last night, and I only got to the first day.

I'm disappointed, but not completely. Yes I wish I was able to see more, but this was a day more than I've been to in 5 years. Besides: with all the people who attended, I wouldn't have been able to get around... so one day is a victory for me!

I purchased CoolTV for my grid yesterday: replaced a channel I never watched, A&E. Videotron's free viewing ended, and as I've said getting that station was a no-brainer for me.

It's a great time to be a Jazz fan in Montreal: I was just reading the program book for the Festival, and had it confirmed that we'll have a definite Jazz-themed radio station this fall. Because of some technical snafus, they couldn't debut during the festival.

So now we have one of the best Festivals in the world, I have CoolTV as a channel to choose on TV, and we'll have a radio station too... I'm in Paradise.

Jazz Fest - Day 1

They were still building things for the opening day. Johnny Clegg came on stage almost 40 minutes later. He seemed fairly disinterested in his performance, keeping his hands in his pockets for the most part until he had a guitar to play.

Even then, he and his band only performed 4 songs before they wrapped up - and they never even acknowledged Montreal.

I hope that isn't a sign of things to come. I'll next be back there Sunday.

There's a poster for Ray Charles. He opened the festival in 1980. That was the second one I believe.

Edit: Clegg was probably just doing a stage rehearsal for his big show in the evening, and Ray was the first performer at the first Festival.

I'm preparing for my trip to the Jazz Fest today. I got cleaned up, packed my bag, put on my first dose of sublock for the day... I even watched some CoolTV to get me in a Jazz mindset. I may be physically exhausted by the afternoon, but it'll be worth it!

It's official: I've reserved my transport for the opening day of the Montreal Jazzfest. Now, barring rain, I'll be there... even if it leaves me as a puddle.

I finally changed my air conditioner plug to a different socket than my computer, so I can have both on now instead of switching to the fan mode when I use my PC. No more concerns about power spikes! Words aren't enough to convey how good it is to now compute in a cooled room.

It's now 6 days before the Montreal International Jazz Festival... it being the 25^th anniversary, I'll be there if I have to be pushed around on a wheeled mattress... There's been a lot of press about the event, especially an indoor concert by Jazz guitarist Keith Jarrett. I'm not a real fan of guitar jazz, but I understand he hasn't performed live in several years... in major part due to health troubles. The indoor show I'll be sorry to miss will be a tribute to the late Ray Charles. Ray performed at the 'fest since its earliest days. Montreal has many special memories of him.

I've been watching CoolTV, the Canadian Jazz specialty TV channel, all day.

As if I needed more reason to add the channel to my grid after the free-view is over (already a given), they air a concert with Holly Cole, my favorite Jazz diva.

Not that in my case a hard sell is neccesary!

I watched some CoolTV this morning... a show called SmoothJazz TV. What freaked me out was when they called Sade a jazz singer. I never thought of her as one!

It's not related to Jazz, but this channel was the major reason I came back to Videotron when I moved to my new apartment. Now, the big media monster bought the station - and in a major jackass move, hit it with a "slash and burn".

Why do I suspect the channel will now disappear?

CoolTV is playing in the background right now... with my PC now back from repair, I've been using it as much as possible. It's strange to use TV as a radio... but until we get a decent Jazz station in Montreal, that's the best I can do.

Videotron has given us over a month of free viewing on a lot of channels. They have a lot of new ones added to their selection, so they're hoping many of us will be tempted to sign up.

One of the new channels is one I mentioned here last year: CoolTV. Jazz-themed movies, biographies of current and former jazz performers, and extended video events.

It's pretty much a given I'll get this one, probably to replace Showcase, which I never watch.

Here in Canada we must now be the RIAA's worst nightmare: song downloads have been judged not copyright infringement.

Sorry about that. A lot of bad things have been happening in my life of late, including my apartment being robbed. This sapped me of a lot of energy to do anything else. Still, a month is a long time...

Slashdot | Adrian Lamo Pleads Guilty

Ultimately, his sentence will be 6-12 months... but that's not the point.

FACT: he never was a malicious hacker. He always turned i8n all results of his actions to the folks in charge, so they could improve things.

FACT: he turned himself in.

If he'd just let the company in question be, let malicious folks cause damage to customers, or even just forgot to ever mention his actions... he'd be scot free. Instead, he did everything for good reasons, turned himself in, and he gets punished.

How is this a good message?

I haven't really spoken of this since I put it up for 9-11, but with the earthquake tragedy in Iran, donating to the Red Cross is now even more important.

Through the Red Cross donations will actually get to the people. instead of to the corrupt governments.

I can empathize with people who lost over 100 relatives. Most Jews with family who survived the Holocaust can.

From Friday Five (appropriate for this time of year:

1. What was your biggest accomplishment this year?
I'd say that would be making the winner's circle for NaNoWriMo: I wrote the first draft of a 50,000 word novel in 30 days in Novenber.

2. What was your biggest disappointment?
That would be my two rejected short stories from anthology contests. Not the rejection letters themselves... they were friendly enough that I'm hopefully getting closer to an acceptance. I'm just disappointed that I didn't get published in a book this year.

3. What do you hope the new year brings?
Obviously that I get one of my attempts published this year.

4. Will you be making any New Year's resolutions? If yes, what will they be?
I haven't really made any since 1999, as I'm still keeping that resolution to track down high school contacts.

5. What are your plans for New Year's Eve?
I'll be going to my aunt in Vermont. This will be the last time before they start to fingerprint everyone at the border...

1. Do you enjoy the cold weather and snow for the holidays?
I don't enjoy cold weather at any time of the year actually.

2. What is your ideal holiday celebration? How, where, with whom would you celebrate to make things perfect?
For the past several years I've had the chance to celebrate various holidays at my aunt (mom's sister)'s home in Vermont. She's disappointed if she has less than 20 guests; I'm just happy when she gets to actually sit to enjoy the meal herself.

3. Do you do have any holiday traditions?
Every 'Hanemas' (Hanukkah/X-Mas) I spend the holiday eve/day at my sister's home, to watch my nephew and nieces open their gifts.

4. Do you do anything to help the needy?
I visit the Charity USA Website daily, to help add to its daily donations.

5. What one gift would you like for yourself?
A new printer. My current one is pretty disappointing.

Entertainment Story - canada.com network Diana Krall and Elvis Costello have possibly wed.

A few weeks ago, I heard Elvis on NPR playing jazz standards on piano. He was no slouch in that area either.

I think they make a good match.

Today marked the 23^rd anniversary of the murder of John Lennon.

One of my jazz radio streams plays a set of Beatles songs in jazz form.

John is gone, and George Harrison. 1/2 of the known Beatles. Add former members Stu Stucliffe and Pete Best, and really 2/3^rds of them have left this world. That's extremely sad.

While writing my NaNo, I've been listening to Jazz radio streams through iTunes, as I mentioned in my last post.

One of the stations, World Jazz Federation Radio is actually my first opportunity to hear sattelite radio.

If this is an example of the medium, I'm not impressed on 3 separate days, I heard the exact same program broadcast - and multiple times in a row!

Yes, we need better alternatives to commercial radio - but this doesn't fit my definition of "better".

I've been using the one feature of iTunes that we can use here in Canada (the MP3 jukebox feature also works, but in this I mean the one different from my other audio apps): streaming radio (OK, Radio Free Virgin does that too... but here I can actually choose radio stations; RFV offers channels that overtime repeat themselves frequently). Mostly I've been listening to the Jazz ones. I know: big surprise.

One thing that bothers me though, is how many of them have fund drives like the PBS stations. It bugs me in that you end up hearing more pledge-begs than the actual music they hope you'll support.

I've spoken here before - MANY times - about my views on the whole MP3 and song-swapping thing.

Well, I now have two programs on my PC, both that allow the 99-cent song downloads. I'm eager to do the right thing and help artists to make some lucre back on their works...

Only problem: neither program (iTunes and MusicMatch Jukebox) are available for Canadian users.

So much for doing the right thing...

I've been seeing ads for a new digital TV channel called Cool TV. Classic musicals, with legendary jazz musicians to close the night.

The channel isn't yet offered on my digital service, but once it is, I'll probably change one of my other choices to get it.

I've been meaning to track down NPR streams for a while now. This one offers some fantastic jazz programs on weeknights. I learned tonight that they also have an excellent one for Broadway music too.

This week's Friday Five touches on several themes I've covered in this blog for a long time:

1. Who is your favorite singer/musician? Why?
Overall, my favorite is Billy Joel. His songs have always told stories that resonate with me.

I still remember listening to the Glass Houses album over and over on a car trip to Florida when I was younger.

In Jazz, I've been a huge fan of Holly Cole. Her haunting song styling hypnotized me years ago. Ironic, since one of the songs she's well-known for is a cover of Trust in Me from the Disney film The Jungle Book - a song sung by the snake character as it tries to use its hypnotic powers.

2. What one singer/musician can you not stand? Why?
I've never been able to get into Diana Krall. Maybe because I'm a fan of Holly, granted - but I listened to one of Diana's albums and was bored out of my mind.

Outside of Jazz, I can't stand Eminem. He comes across as a jerk, and his voice is one that gets on my nerves the moment he performs.

3. If your favorite singer wasn't in the music business, do you think you would still like him/her as a person?
Billy seems in interviews to be a cool guy. I'd still like him if I had the chance to meet him.

4. Have you been to any concerts? If yes, who put on the best show?
Let me see:

Cindy Lauper put on a very fun show. This was in the 1980s, during the height of her popularity.
Julian Lennon I saw a few months later. MAJOR snore fest.
The Jackson Family I can't remember ever wishing such hurt to Michael. The show was great, but he was still a freak back then.
Huey Lewis and the News was another fun show.
U2 during their Joshua Tree tour. That was a very high energy concert.
Whitney Houston was fantastic musically, but she came close to topping Diana Ross in insincerity. The difference was that Whitney did sound bored.
ZZ Top was fun for all the trademark spots we knew, but their show just felt lacking in many ways.

The best concert to me: Styx a summer earlier. They had a huge library of songs, and I'm a huge mark for harmonies. Plus, when they praised Montreal, said it was special to them we knew they meant it; ours was the city where they first got their big break.

5. What are your thoughts on downloading free music online vs. purchasing albums? Do you feel the RIAA is right in its pursuit to stop people from dowloading free music?
Why stuff like Kazaa and the P2P era became so popular was that 20 years after the introduction of the CD the cost of one still didn't go down. It's near 20 bucks to buy a disc where you may like 2-3 songs. Listeners got fed up with that expense, and record industry greed.

I think the RIAA has gone too far in their moves. Like David Bowie said: "You don't sue your customers." With over 63 million potential buyers, the music industry will take a huge hit if a large enough number of them get angry enough to stop buying anything - and all the RIAA is doing is turning these folks against them.

The Apple I-Tunes store has proven what should be done. Not lawsuits, just having people pay for what they want.

1. Is the name you have now the same name that's on your birth certificate? If not, what's changed?
It remains the same, although my full name of Jeffrey I usually shorten to Jeff.

2. If you could change your name (first, middle and/or last), what would it be?
I would take my original middle name of Alan, as I'm the only person in my group of siblings not to have one.

3. Why were you named what you were? (Is there a story behind it? Who specifically was responsible for naming you?)
I'm named Jeffrey from my zeide's name Jack. In our Jewish traditions, childrens' names come from those of deceased family or friends, to honor their memory.

My non-existent middle name has a story:

I was supposed to have Alan initially. I have a nasty aunt who made a big stink that it was the name she intended for her son. I've come to the conclusion that this aunt is bi-polar. It's the only reason that makes sense for her always being so antagonistic to me. That, and she's always been competitive; I was the firstborn, and not to her, so she always treated me and anything about me badly.

Long story short, she ended up giving her son the middle name Ian. I think she just wanted that extra small victory.

4. Are there any names you really hate or love? What are they and why?
I've always been partial to the names Amanda for a girl (also the name of one of my nieces), and Jake for a boy.

5. Is the analysis of your name at kabalarians.com / triggur.org / astroexpert accurate? How or how isn't it?
My analysis at kabalarians was fairly on the mark. It gives the image of a warm, caring and artistic person.

Triggur is way off the mark. Mind you, it aims at a very dark, negative description anyway.

Astroexpert was hard to get through to an answer, but this part fits me to a 'T':

The native will be of intellectual kind and his mind will be ever active and sharp. He will be restless, versatile and inclined to have changes often. He will be much interested in reading and writing and may develop special interest in a few subjects.

The native will be known for his wit, logic and intelligence. The native will quickly learn new things. He has the ability to do a task with great skill and grace. The native will prefer company of learned and wise persons.

Well, 9-11 wasn't as difficult to get through this year - although the fact that it was dealt with so off-the-cuff by many, only two years past, disturbs me.

- Oh: I had the casualty numbers much higher than they really were... there were nearly 3100 lives lost, not 8000. Still, anything over 0 is still too much to me.

It's now the eve of the 2^nd anniversary of 9-11... I suspect it will be a very emotional day for me.

I couldn't help but find it "convenient" that a new tape of Osama bin Laden was "discovered" just on the eve of that horrible day.

Regardless of my feelings about G.W. Bush (you'd have to be hiding under a rock to miss them), the fact remains: this is a mmnan who orchestrated the murder of nearly 8000 innocent lives, under a foolish belief that this was a choice that a higher power wanted. To him, these weren't people, just means to an end.

I don't know if he's actually alive, or if his image is being used by other jackals. Regardless, these are evil men, and they have to be found and brought to a justice they deserve.
